Rio Grande used to be an important cattle centre once upon a time. Situated near the mouth of Lagoa dos Patos, Brazil's biggest lagoon, Rio Grande's north across the lagoon isn't much inhabited. Visitors to the area can see the Cathedral de Sao Pedro which is said to be the oldest church in the state. Tourists can take the boat across the lagoon to Sao Jose do North for a little day trip. Sunsets on the lagoon are spectacular. Sitting at the southern end of Brazil, Rio Grande is relatively small but has some nice places to see nonetheless. Cassino beach is a niche beach for tourists and there are also some good museums in the city.
Living on the southern end of Brazil is somewhat more relaxed than in the more predominant touristic places. The scenery is spectacular and the lifestyle easy going. Many people who decide to relocate here for good actually enjoy what Rio Grande has to offer. Local property is very affordable by any means and locals can enjoy all amenities. There is also a local airport that makes getting to and from Rio Grande a child's play.
